St. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX/AP) – The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education would like to see the federally mandated No Child Left Behind Act go away.

The Education Department is seeking a waiver which is allowed but first they want to know what you think. Education officials will gather public input starting now until January 5 and then will present their plan to the State Board of Education on January 17th.

Under No Child, the U.S. Department of Education requires all students to show proficiency in math and reading by 2014. States must meet conditions such as setting standards to prepare students for college and careers.

The state’s application can be viewed at http://dese.mo.gov/qs/esea-waiver.html.
